Concept Artist / Visual Designer (Volunteer)

Design Cambridge, MA, USA Full-time Volunteer

The Role

We're looking for a Concept Artist / Visual Designer to help define and evolve the visual language of Freaking Aliens as we build the nervous system for planetary-scale AI.

This is not a one-off design task. It's an ongoing, collaborative role. You'll sit in on weekly discussions about sensor nodes, edge AI architecture, and how autonomous systems will connect to our unified perception layer — then translate those conversations into clear, high-quality visuals that help everyone think more clearly about what we're building.

Your work won't just explain the system. In many cases, it will influence how the system is designed.

What You'll Work On

Primary focus areas:

  • Website visuals and illustrations for freakingaliens.com
  • Pitch deck graphics and visual narratives for investors
  • Sensor node hardware concept art and product renders
  • Clean, professional explainer diagrams for our edge AI architecture
  • Network visualizations showing the unified perception layer
  • Diagrams illustrating how autonomous systems connect to our infrastructure
  • Motion graphics or short explainer videos

Visual Style

We care deeply about visual quality and credibility.

The style we're aiming for:

  • Clean, minimal, and technically grounded
  • Modern and cinematic, but restrained
  • The kind of visuals you'd expect from aerospace, robotics, or serious AI infrastructure companies

Good reference points include NASA/JPL-style diagrams, grounded science fiction (Arrival, Interstellar), and the visual language of companies like Boston Dynamics, Waymo, or NVIDIA.

What we're not looking for: cartoon styles, generic startup vectors, pixel art, or visuals that prioritize style over clarity.

Practical Details

  • Location: Remote, US-based (preference for Massachusetts)
  • Time commitment: Flexible, roughly a few hours per week
  • Cadence: Weekly meeting + asynchronous creative work
  • Tools: Use whatever tools you're most comfortable with
  • Collaboration: Direct collaboration with the founder and core engineering team
  • Start date: Immediately

This role suits someone who enjoys listening to complex technical ideas, synthesizing them visually, and contributing thoughtfully over time rather than just delivering isolated assets.

Who This Is For

This role is likely a good fit if you:

  • Are building or strengthening a strong portfolio
  • Enjoy visualizing complex technical systems and AI infrastructure
  • Have an interest in robotics, autonomous systems, edge computing, or aerospace
  • Want to contribute early to a startup and grow with it over time

You don't need startup experience. Curiosity, visual skill, and good judgment matter far more.

What We Offer

This is a volunteer position with significant upside:

  • Equity opportunity — Potential to become a paid contributor with equity as we scale beyond our pre-seed funding
  • Meaningful creative ownership — You'll define the visual language of the company
  • Portfolio-worthy work — Real visuals for a real product, not hypothetical exercises
  • Visibility and credit — Your contributions will be seen by investors, partners, and the public
  • Collaborative environment — Work alongside experienced engineers and scientists on a mission-driven team

We're a pre-seed startup building this company to last. Early team members who prove themselves will have the opportunity to grow into leadership roles with meaningful equity stakes.

How to Apply

Send an email to careers@freakingaliens.com with:

  1. A short introduction — Who you are and why you're interested
  2. A link to your portfolio or relevant work samples

Subject line: Concept Artist / Visual Designer

Why Join Now?

We're at one of the most exciting stages of a startup — we have a near-functioning MVP and are raising our pre-seed round, but there's still unlimited room to shape how the world sees this company. You'll be joining early enough to define the visual identity from the ground up.

If you're the kind of person who wants to visualize ideas that matter, work at the intersection of AI and the physical world, and be part of a team building essential infrastructure for the autonomous future — we want to hear from you.
